Al Ghurair appointed R+R in June 2014 to undertake the refurbishment of the original phase 1 of the mall. The scope was to create a fresh open interior space as the original was dark and claustrophobic and also to revamp the existing exterior mall and car park areas including signage.
The interior posed a huge problem as the mall had a vast array of columns which in many areas were oversized and originally clad in dark timber, combine this with a very limited ceiling height and we had major issues to contend with. By introducing a new lighting scheme that was planned to break up the perspective of the long corridors the aim was to give an increased feel of width. We used Laminam panels to all the main walls and columns which enabled a faster more efficient way to rejuvenate the space quickly. We also wanted the store fronts to stand out so laminam panels act more as a backdrop to the stores.
The owner asked that the existing flooring be retained and now with the lighter finishes and better lighting it stand out, whereas in the old scheme it was totally lost.
Site works commenced in December 2014 with Al Tayer Stocks being the selected contractor and works were completed in August 2015, project management was by Mace international.
